On 24th June, 1916, 11th Royal West Kent of 122 Brigade, 41st Division, moved into the front line trenches in Ploegsteert Wood in Belgium, close to the French border. On the evening of 30th June they carried out a minor raid on the German lines, but finding the wire uncut they were forced to return to their own trenches with one man wounded. In retaliation, the German artillery immediately opened up on the trenches held by 11th Royal West Kent and six men were killed and another twelve wounded. One of those killed was Alfred Bryant.
